Bare Bones means to have the very bare elements of something or the bare essentials. When you are bare bones, you have nothing but your bones which is how this cliche originated. In modern language, it is often used when describing how you are not prepared for extravagant things; rather you only have the bare essentials and necessities available to you. Bare bones is used in a variety of different situations when describing you only have the bare essentials with you whether literally or figuratively.
