he was just a port in the storm

To say he was just a port in the storm is a figurative term for saying he (or she) is having serious trouble and unable to accept any sort of solution to the trouble, whether it is a good solution or not. To be a port in the storm, you would be having a serious dilemma and have extreme difficulties getting out of the current situation as it considered a big crisis. This is used in reference to a person who figuratively is having difficulties with few solutions.
