if I were in his shoes

If I were in his shoes is an idiom often used to say that if you were in his place you would do things a certain way. It is also a way of showing that you would understand things from his point of view if you were in his shoes. Any time a phrase mentions being in someone elses shoes, the meaning of this is that you would then be this person and have control of their actions, what they do and say, and see things from their angle.
