make tracks

To make tracks means to leave a place in order to go somewhere else. Literally, making tracks happens as you are walking on a certain type of ground which allows your feet or shoes to show traces of where you were such as dirt, sand or mud. Figuratively, to make tracks can be used in any instance where you are leaving a pace, usually at a quick pace and have an idea of where you want to go but want to leave traces behind of where you were and how you traveled there.
