Run it up the flagpole is an expression used to tell people about an idea you have and see what they think about the idea. It is usually used casually as in to see what people think of your idea, simply as a curiosity. The expression first became popular in the 1990s and is a cliche often used when you want to tell someone your idea, where you will run it up the flagpole. You may also hear this phrase used in a more serious manner such as a bad idea you want to run up the flagpole to see if anyone else agrees with this bad idea.
